The world’s biggest building is to be built in Moscow, Russia, and will boast 3,000 hotel rooms, cinemas, a theatre and a sports complex as well as a 900 apartments and an international school.
The 27 million sq ft (2.5 million sq m) tepee-shaped building – designed by Foster + Partners – will be 1,480ft (450m) high and cost US$4bn (£2.06bn, 2.73bn euro).
The building, located 4.5 miles from the Kremlin, will be named Crystal Island.
Norman Foster said: “Crystal Island is one of the world’s most ambitious building projects and it represents a milestone in the 40-year history of the practice. It is the largest single building in the world, creating a year-round destination for Moscow and a sustainable, dynamic new urban quarter.
“It is a paradigm of compact, mixed-use, sustainable city planning, with an innovative energy strategy and ‘smart’ skin which buffers against climate extremes.”
Crystal Island is scheduled to be built within the next five years.
